This university, which was started with 1 faculty and 1 department, was established in 1967 as the only single-department college in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions dedicated to the field of economics.

Building on its previous incarnation as the Hiroshima Industrial Junior College, which was founded in 1961, the university itself was established in 1963 as the Hiroshima Institute of Technology (Faculty of Engineering).
Ever since then, the university has continued in its development, through the establishment of a graduate school of engineering and through the reorganization and expansion of its faculties and departments, and over this period, the university has sent roughly 50,000 of its alumni out into the world.
