Living in Hiroshima

Rules for Everyday Life

Here we have compiled information that you should know when you are trying to rent housing to live in Japan.

What to Be Careful of When Moving In

In Japan, it is customary to visit your neighbors in the rooms below you or next to you in order to greet them after you have recently moved in.
Although it has become commonplace in recent years for young people living alone to not greet their neighbors in such a way, this act of greeting your neighbors can help to create opportunities to engage in communication with the members of your local community.
Knowing what kind of people are living around you can bring you peace of mind in even the most unexpected of situations.
Additionally, there are also organizations that have been established by local residents, such as your local jichikai (community associations) and chonaikai (neighborhood associations).
Such organizations engage in activities, such as cleaning the local neighborhood, conducting events where residents can get to know each other, and drafting and distributing newsletters.
Try to participate in such activities, as you will get a chance to interact with Japanese people living in your neighborhood.

What You Should Be Careful about during Your Everyday Life in Japan

Noise Complaints

One thing you should be particularly careful about is noise complaints.
When it is late at night, please refrain from speaking in a loud voice, making a commotion, or playing music at loud volumes, among other such behaviors.
Please also try to be gentle when opening and closing doors at night as well.

Housing Rules

Always make sure to notify your landlord if the number of people living at your property has increased.
Additionally, please refrain from living together as a group of 2 or more people in apartments that are reserved for usage by single people (for living alone), as this is a violation of the rules.

Disposing of Garbage

The day(s) of the week/month, time of day, and rules for sorting and disposing of garbage will differ depending on your local municipality or the particular condominium you live at.
Please follow the rules when disposing of garbage.
Please check the official website for the municipality for the area that you live in for more details on how to dispose of garbage.
