Breakdown for living costs
Incidentally… According to a survey conducted by JASSO (Japan Student Services Organization) in 2011, the national average for monthly living costs including tuition was 138,000 yen while it was 119,000 yen for Hiroshima (Chugoku region).
This shows that living costs for students in Hiroshima could be kept low compared to that in large metropolitan areas.

Monthly living costs for international students
We asked two international students who are currently studying in Hiroshima to tell us about their monthly living costs.
We received many comments from other international students currently studying in Hiroshima, too.
- food cost
- You can eat cheap, hearty meals at the cafeterias on campus.
- mobile phone
- Various price plans are available, and a friend managed to keep mobile phone bills at around 1,000 yen a month, using free calls.
At first I was using a mobile phone with a price plan for phone calls and short mail only, but changed it to a smartphone afterwards since that seemed more convenient in communicating with professors at university and with other students from my seminar.
- book expenses
- About 10,000 – 20,000 yen was necessary to buy textbooks, etc. when I was a freshman and sophomore.
I took advantage of the library at university and read novels and magazines there.
